List of Country Capitals
This list of country capitals includes a total of 245 capitals from around the world. When we created this list, we decided on what should be and shouldn't be included and came up with the following conclusion by asking ourselves the following questions:
What defines a country?
Since people have different definitions of what a country truly is, we've included all areas of land which have been assigned a country code and have capitals assigned to them. We've included countries which are in territorial disputes; typically a place where the people have declared their independence from a country and formed their own country but that country has not been fully recognized by the UN due to a dispute with the country that they've declared their independence from. We've also added sovereign states, associated states, kingdoms, dependent territories etc.
What defines a capital?
A capital is the most important city or town of a country which is usually the seat of the government and/or administrators of the land.
For your convenience, we've split the list up into categories. The list below includes 196 capitals of all countries which are independent and even those that are undergoing territorial disputes. Those undergoing territorial disputes have been marked with (D). You can click on the country name to learn more about the dispute.
